The Black Addiction
A lot of people have e-mailed me telling me how much my blog and my Mode Lab articles inspire them to want to wear bold patterns and prints. The problem is, a lot of them feel hesitant about doing so because they are so used to wearing black and don't know how to wear anything else besides that. If you ask me, I'd say that getting rid of the habit of wearing black is like giving up smoking.
Wearing black has become such an ingrained habit nowadays that people seldom strive to try anything "new" anymore. In fact, wearing black is almost as addicting as nicotine.
When we smoke cigarettes, we experience a certain feeling of calmness. Similarly, when we wear black, we get a familiar comforting feeling because we all know that "no one can go wrong with basic black". And it's true -- black always makes us look confident and sophisticated.
However, if you are a fashion-conscious human being (if you're not, you're reading the wrong blog), then I must urge you to step out of your comfort zone and experiment a little more with new things.
Giving up "black" is like giving up cigarettes -- you have to take it one day at a time. Don't go into shock by suddenly thrusting yourself into the world of colors and prints. Instead, start slow by incorporating subtle pops of color into your outfits by wearing colored accessories, bags, and shoes. After a couple of months of doing this, you will start to feel more comfortable with colors and be able to wear dresses, cardigans, and jeans in bright and bold hues. Once you've grown accustomed to doing this, you will then start to feel excited about mixing and matching different prints and colors together.
Much like giving up cigarettes, however, there will always be a time where you'll experience a period of withdrawal and go back to wearing the black that you love so much. The good thing about it is that when that time comes, your desire to wear black will merely be a "want" instead of a "need", which means you'll be perfectly comfortable to wear other colors too depending on your mood.
I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this, but I personally find it boring how designers often use black as the predominant color in their collections. Since "everyone looks good in black", isn't it kind of a cheap cop-out to resort to this ancient method of looking good? It's like you're admitting to yourself that you do not have a good sense of style or eye for fashion because you only wear something that you know would look good on everyone else too.

It's sad how sometimes, people instantly think that person is "fashionable" just because he/she is wearing monochrome black. All black is great for me, but what makes your monochrome stand out is the individual pieces that make up for it. And I have to agree with you that designers who always stick to black are kind of.. mediocre.

I used to have a 'black period' as well, and it is so addicting indeed! But i don't know if i agree with you that it's boring when designers use black as their main-colour. I guess it must be difficult to make spectacular clothes in black because it's quite a basic colour and everyone has already done black clothes, so it's more difficult to create something completely new in black!
ReplyDeleteThis selection is just awesome dear!

I totally agree with you, black is comforting but not challenging. As a fashionable person you need to go out of the comfort zone and seize the moment but sometimes we also need that comfort that black brings. As a designer being mediocre is totally not it so I am totally on that bandwagon with you because they are supposed to challenge our fashion sense.

I must admit, sometimes, I wear all black at a few days in a row, especially in during college, because I was channeling French women haha. But I do love to accessorize the look with bright jewelry or bags ;)

You're right, it takes a black-addict some courage to wear colors, but I also think that it's not necessary to abandon black altogether - the point is to feel comfortable any color of the rainbow. Great article!

I think that black on black is great idea, but for my (and I see that for you too) it's "too obvious" solution, but with adding some colorful jewelry/shoes or bag it could be chic and amazing solution :) And btw, great new design of your blog, dear :)

This is such a well written post and really speaks (or more accurately, shouts) to me. I don't smoke, but I definitely have an addiction to black clothing. I adore the colder seasons purely for the 'get out of jail free card' to wear black each and every day! Having said that, I've always loved wearing colourful clothing in the warmer seasons and as your post mentions, started with bright embellished necklaces! Have a wonderful weekend :)

I am a black attire addict--admit it! But, in the last year, I've come to infuse a lot more color into my wardrobe, and I'm loving it! :) T. http://tickledpinkwoman.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI've never thought of wearing black as similar to smoking, but I see where you are coming from here! Black is a safe color .. everyone looks good in it and it can easily get addicting. I had a period of wearing mostly black, but wearing more colors makes me a much happier person I feel!
