Of Clothes & Relationships
"Fashion is an investment, and clothes are like relationships."
This is something I've come to realize throughout the years. In the same way you invest your time and energy into your friendships and relationships, you invest your money into the things that you purchase, and it's only natural that you expect something in return. After all, relationships are two-sided and it's always a "give and take".
When it comes to clothes, the thing we should expect from them at the very least is versatility and long-term use.
That is why we need to pick and choose which pieces to invest a lot of money in, and which pieces we can get at a cheaper price and lower quality.
Think of it this way. There are some people in our lives that are mere acquaintances because they do not give us anything substantial or beneficial in the long-term, so we pass by them in the halls and say "hi" but that's as far as it goes, because ultimately we'd have to let them go. Thinking about it in terms of clothing and accessories, these are the pieces that are trendy and seasonal, which means they come and go in the blink of an eye and so we do not necessarily need to invest a lot of money into them. It's okay to purchase pieces like these at a lower price even if it means that they will tear or break easily, because by that time they're probably out of style anyway. It's just like giving your acquaintances a little bit of your time but not too much, because once the fun runs out, they disappear from your life eventually.
The same principle can be applied to people that are close to you, such as your friends, boyfriends, and families. It's okay to invest so much time, effort, and energy into those relationships because they are durable, long-lasting, and will be beneficial to you for your entire life. These are like the clothes and accessories that are classic and timeless, which means you'll be able to wear them throughout all seasons in a long time to come. Investing a lot of money into these kinds of things is worth it, because in return you are receiving years and years of use. A $50 cardigan, for example, might seem a tad bit overpriced, but if you think about it in the long run, it is actually worth every penny because you will still be able to wear it 10, 20, and even 30 years from now.
To put it simply in "designer" language:
"A limited edition Louis Vuitton Miroir Speedy might seem like a good choice of purchase, but in the end, you'll realize that a classic Monogram Neverfull might just be the better option."
In order to help you pick and choose, here are some ideas.
What to invest in:
* A neutral-colored cardigan (perfect for casual days)
* A classic structured blazer (this will never go out of style!)
* Denim jeans that fit perfectly
* Skinny jeans (black, white, and colored)
* A white button-down shirt
* Tank tops
* A great leather jacket
* A nice bag with a classic design
* Plain t-shirts (you can style them any way you want through layering)
* A statement necklace
* The perfect little black dress
* Sneakers

You've brought up a very good point, Kylie! Clothing needs to carry the promise of being timeless and there are some staples which consistently fit the brief! Your checklist is so on point and I ticked off the final point just last weekend by investing my first (ever!) leather jacket! :)

Love this post! To be honest, I have clothes from my mom that are older than me, as in 25 years and older na! I still wear them and they are still in good shape. I also love thrift shopping too because you can really find classic pieces there for a lower price.

You're totally right, it's so much worth to buy basics with good quality! I'm trying to do this myself as well but i'm still failing haha. Most of the time i buy an expensive statement piece and just cheap basics (while saying to myself "aaaah you won't stand out in basics so it doesn't matter)

I am totally guilty of buying pieces that I don't really need and keep them for a longtime because of the price but I have learnt over the past few years to buy those pieces cheaply since I might never wear it again after a while. Cool fashion tips
